Emergency Motion in Maldives Parliament Calls for Action Against Indian Military Incursions
An emergency motion was submitted to the Maldives Parliament on Monday, criticizing the government's handling of an incident where Indian soldiers boarded several Maldivian fishing vessels inside the Maldives' maritime territory. Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed presented the motion, which was unanimously approved with 54 votes. The motion accuses state institutions of failing to protect sovereignty and safety, highlighting a lack of clear communication causing panic. Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon is expected to appear before Parliament after a 14-day notice. The incident involved Indian coastguard ships boarding at least three Maldivian fishing vessels near the northern maritime boundary. The MNDF Coastguard responded under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's direct orders. The Ministry of Defence condemned the actions, accusing India of violating international maritime laws.
