Uncertainty Hangs Over Malé Region’s Housing Schemes as New Government Takes Office

As the new government assumes office, uncertainty surrounds the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes in the Malé region. Over 40,000 applications were submitted in the second round. President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's office has not yet decided on processing the second round, and the outgoing government may not act before November 17. Muizzu's manifesto promises 65,000 plots or flats, including specific reclamation projects. First-round recipients will not be affected.

More than 40,000 Applications Submitted in Second Round of Land and Flat Schemes

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure announces 40,594 applications in second round of Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing schemes launched on 24 September. 19,347 for land, 21,247 for flats. Binveriya allocates land from Giravaru North lagoon or UTF, over 4,000 plots. Gedhoruveriya provides 8,000 flats. First phase had 13,000 qualified. Delays due to flu outbreak. President promised completion before 5 November.
