Seaweed farming gains momentum as Maldives exports 63 tonnes monthly

The Maldives is exporting 63 tonnes of seaweed monthly, according to the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources. State Minister Mohamed Muthalib said seaweed cultivation began as a pilot project by a private company in Baa Fehendhoo, starting with 100 kg and now yielding 63 tonnes of dried seaweed per month (about five shipping containers). The government is expanding seaweed farming nationwide, with projects in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and additional proposals. Five mariculture zones have been designated: Boduthiladhunmathi, Raa Atoll, Meemu Atoll, Thaa Atoll, and a lagoon near Maniyafushi. The global seaweed market was valued at USD 17.14 billion in 2023, with expectations to double by 2032, offering opportunities for Maldives' blue economy.
