From Raa to Meemu: Monsoon Sparks Yellow Alert Across Key Atolls

The Maldives Meteorological Service issued a Yellow Alert for Raa to Meemu Atolls due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM on May 19, as the southwest monsoon intensifies. Wind speeds are expected between 19-24 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. The monsoon began in southern atolls on May 7 and is moving northward. Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution.

Met Office Forecasts Severe Weather for Northern and Central Regions

The Maldives Meteorological Service warned of heavy rains and strong winds in northern and central regions from Haa Alifu to Meemu Atoll. Gusts of 25-30 mph, possibly up to 50 mph during showers, and rough seas. Gaafaru Island recorded 67.7mm rain, Goidhoo 61.2mm, and Dharavandhoo 20.5mm in the past 24 hours. Authorities advised caution during Eid al-Adha holiday travel.
