NASA’s Artemis 3 Mission: Astronauts to Install Moonquake Detectors on Lunar Surface
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center announced plans to deploy the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS) during the Artemis 3 mission to monitor moonquakes. LEMS is a compact seismometer designed for long-term monitoring at the Moon's south pole, operating from three months to two years. It was one of three candidate payloads selected, including the Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora Instrument by Space Lab Technologies and the Lunar Dielectric Analyzer by researchers from Tokyo University and JAXA. Moonquakes were first observed during Apollo missions and are caused by gravitational forces and temperature fluctuations. LEMS aims to fill knowledge gaps about seismic activity at the south pole.
