Ukraine Accused of Orchestrating Drone Attack on Moscow

The Russian Defence Ministry accused Ukraine of orchestrating a drone attack on Moscow, involving multiple unmanned aerial vehicles targeting the Moscow region. One drone struck the IQ-Quarter skyscraper, which houses government agencies, about 5.5 km from the Kremlin. No injuries were reported, but the building sustained damage. Russian air defence destroyed two drones and jammed a third. The attack followed Ukrainian President Zelenskiy's statement suggesting the conflict could extend beyond Ukraine's borders. This marks at least the fifth drone incursion into Moscow since May. In response, Russia targeted Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, with drone strikes that injured one person and destroyed two floors of a college dormitory. The conflict began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Wagner Mutiny Plunges Russia into Uncertainty

The Wagner mutiny has plunged Russia into uncertainty, testing President Putin's leadership. The rebellion by Wagner mercenaries exposed vulnerabilities in Putin's rule. After a deal was struck, Prigozhin and his mercenaries were temporarily shielded from punishment. Putin remained steadfast in support of Defence Minister Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Gerasimov, but media indications suggest they may be replaced. Aleksey Dyumin and Sergey Surovikin are rumored as successors. The necessity for Putin to negotiate and the mercenaries' advance near Moscow highlighted Russia's crisis response limitations. British historian Robert Tombs noted that Putin's authority has been gravely weakened. Ukraine reported reclaiming 130 square kilometers from Russian forces.

Russia’s Armed Rebellion Ends in Failure

Wagner mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin agreed to leave Russia for Belarus on 24 June, halting the group's advance on Moscow. The Kremlin announced Prigozhin and his troops will not face prosecution. The agreement was brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Prigozhin's relocation to Belarus and that the criminal case against him is dropped. President Putin condemned the mutiny, drawing parallels to the 1917 revolution. Security in Moscow was tightened, and mass outdoor events cancelled until 1 July.
