NIC Pushes PGO to Charge Police Over Mishandling of Zakiyya Investigation

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has asked the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) to file criminal charges against police officers involved in the investigation of the 'N. Holhudhoo Zakiyya death' case, citing negligence. The NIC alleges officers committed offences including inappropriate conduct, misuse of official position, obstruction of justice, and obstruction of law enforcement. The PGO will assess the file to determine if the evidentiary threshold is met for prosecution. No timeline has been announced for the decision. The Maldives Police Service and PGO had not issued public comments at the time of publication.

Zakiyya's death: Police prosecution for negligence in probe under discussion

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) is considering legal action against police for negligence in investigating the death of Zakiyya Moosa, whose body was found with severe injuries in N. Holhudhoo 11 months ago. The NIC filed the case with the Duty Prosecution on Thursday. Prosecutor General's Office media officer Ahmed Shafeeu said the case is under study and will proceed if sufficient evidence exists. Zakiyya was found dead on September 10, 2024. Home Minister Ali Ihusaan and police visited Holhudhoo during Ramadan; Ihusaan assured autopsies in all suspicious deaths, but the family felt this was already protocol and accused police of destroying evidence. The FBI assisted the investigation. President Mohamed Muizzu visited Holhudhoo in July and met the family, promising a full investigation. Zakiyya's brother Hassan Waheed expressed concerns about the lack of arrests and unanswered questions.
