Five Islands Chosen for Vertical Farming to Boost Local Agriculture
The Maldivian government has selected five islands for a vertical farming initiative to boost local food production. Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Aishath Rameela announced the selection on PSM News. The islands are Kendhikulhudhoo (Noonu Atoll), Hulhudhuffaaru (Raa Atoll), Naifaru (Lhaviyani Atoll), Mathiveri (Alifu Alifu Atoll), and Kinbidhoo (Thaa Atoll). Local councils have been informed. The government is procuring structures, with delivery expected in early 2025. Training and technical support will follow. Vertical farming using hydroponics and greenhouses aims to overcome limited space, reduce imports, and enhance food security.
