Sodiq takes oath as North Hithadhoo Constituency MP

Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) was sworn in as the North Hithadhoo constituency MP after winning a by-election on 6 June. He received 1,375 votes against Ahmed Saeed's 1,313, a margin of 62 votes. The seat was vacated after the Supreme Court ruled that former MP Ahmed Sinan lost his seat due to failure to repay an MVR 2.5 million loan from Maldives Islamic Bank. Sodiq previously served as Mayor of Addu from 2011 to 2021 and as State Minister of the Planning Ministry during the MDP government.

Sobe takes office as new MP for North Hithadhoo

Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) has taken office as the new MP for North Hithadhoo, increasing the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) seats in Parliament from 12 to 13. The seat was previously held by Mohamed Sinan of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), who lost it after a Supreme Court case over a declared debt. Sobe, a former Addu City mayor, won the by-election on June 6 by defeating PNC candidate Ahmed Saeed with 51% of the vote. The PNC retains a supermajority with 74 out of 93 seats.

Election commission opens polls in North Hithadhoo by-election

Voting commenced Saturday morning in a parliamentary by-election for the North Hithadhoo constituency, triggered by a Supreme Court ruling that unseated the previous representative. The Elections Commission announced polls open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 4,121 eligible voters, with 4,154 ballot papers printed. Seven ballot boxes are deployed across two hubs: two at Dharumavantha School in Malé and five at Hithadhoo School in Addu City. Voters may only bring a blue ink pen and an accepted form of identification.
