Zaya granted 10 days to appoint lawyer in MDP protest case
Criminal Court has granted Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya), North Hulhumalé constituency councilor in Male’ City Council, 10 days to appoint a lawyer in a case related to the MDP's 'Lootuvairi' rally on October 3, 2025. Zaya is charged with obstructing a law enforcement officer. Seven others, including MDP MP Mauroof Zakir, face similar charges. The protest, which began at Artificial Beach in Henveiru, turned violent when police blocked the march on Majeedhee Magu, using pepper spray and sound cannons. Eight protestors were arrested that night, with three more later. The Prosecutor General's Office noted insufficient evidence for some charges.
