Zaya granted 10 days to appoint lawyer in MDP protest case

Criminal Court has granted Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya), North Hulhumalé constituency councilor in Male’ City Council, 10 days to appoint a lawyer in a case related to the MDP's 'Lootuvairi' rally on October 3, 2025. Zaya is charged with obstructing a law enforcement officer. Seven others, including MDP MP Mauroof Zakir, face similar charges. The protest, which began at Artificial Beach in Henveiru, turned violent when police blocked the march on Majeedhee Magu, using pepper spray and sound cannons. Eight protestors were arrested that night, with three more later. The Prosecutor General's Office noted insufficient evidence for some charges.

Majority of Incumbent Lawmakers Secure Nominations in MDP Primaries

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held parliamentary primaries on Saturday, with several incumbent lawmakers securing nominations. Notable winners include Abdulla Jabir, Mohamed 'Bigey' Rasheed, Saud Hussain, Mohamed Nashiz, Abdul Gafoor Moosa, Ahmed Haleem, Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq, and Ahmed Haroon. However, incumbents Hussain Qasim, Rozaina Adam, and Ibrahim Shareef lost. Newcomers like Nazra Naseem, Moosa Ali Manik, and Ahmed 'Maaz' Saleem also secured tickets. The primaries attracted 149 candidates across 40 constituencies, with 25,325 eligible voters. The party aims to field candidates for all 93 seats in the parliamentary elections scheduled for 17 March.
