Papua New Guinea Declares State of Emergency After Violent Protests
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape declared a 14-day state of emergency in Port Moresby after violent protests by police and public sector workers over a pay cut, resulting in at least 16 deaths. The city is under heavy military and police presence with over 1,000 soldiers on standby. Several officials, including the finance secretary and police commissioner, were suspended. Former Prime Minister Peter O'Neill called it the darkest day and called for Marape's resignation. Australia's Defence Minister reported improvements.
