Gatherings Will No Longer Be Allowed in Green Zones: CP
Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau announced that future gatherings will no longer be allowed in Green Zones (high-security areas) following protests and clashes near Parliament on 28 January 2024. Under the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act (Act No. 1/2013), rallies are prohibited in Green Zones without exception. The act was amended during the Abdulla Yameen administration. President Mohamed Muizzu has asked Parliament to expedite a bill to repeal the article restricting gatherings, which was introduced by MP Abdulla Jabir in 2019 but stalled in committee. Shujau stated that despite past tolerance, the law will now be strictly enforced.
