ACC Investigating Ras Malé Project

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into the Ras Malé project, the largest project of the Mohamed Muizzu administration, over corruption allegations. The investigation, confirmed by ACC Media Officer Hassan Manik, is in preliminary stages and will look into allegations of corruption in the project's implementation. The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) alleged MVR70 billion corruption in the dredging component, while former President Abdullah Yameen also expressed concerns. Housing Minister Ali Haider confirmed seeking an overseas consultant for the Ras Malé eco-city development at Fushidhiggaru Lagoon. The 800-hectare project aims to be environmentally friendly and climate-resistant. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) denied stalled work allegations. HDC Denies Suspending Work on Ras Malé Project

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has denied reports that land reclamation for the Ras Malé project at Fushidhiggarufalhu has stalled. Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMC) was tasked with the development on 18 December last year. President Mohamed Muizzu had stated that land reclamation would be complete within eight months if work proceeds on schedule. HDC Information Officer Mohamed Siraj told local media that dredging work is continuing, but the main work currently is construction of the bund wall. HDC maintains that the project remains on schedule.

President Muizzu Launches Maldives’ Largest-Ever Land Reclamation Project ‘Ras Malé’

President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Ras Malé land reclamation project on 18 December 2023 at Fushidhiggaru lagoon. The project will reclaim 1,150 hectares, nearly three times the size of Hulhumalé, making it the largest land reclamation in Maldives history. The city will be elevated two meters at edges and three meters at center to address climate change. Features include an airstrip connected by bridge, targeting 'Maldives Eco City' with 100% renewable energy and zero-carbon transport. The contract was awarded to Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMC). The government allocated MVR 1.4 billion over three years, with MVR 400 million for 2024. President Muizzu pledged completion within eight months.
