Indian crew evacuated after 10 months stranded off Istanbul
Four Indian sailors stranded for 10 months on the abandoned container ship AZRA C off Istanbul were evacuated. The Mongolia-flagged ship has been moored since August 2025. The owners were arrested in January for a drugs bust. ITF and DAD-DER provided supplies. The case highlights a systemic problem of vessel abandonments; 2025 was the worst year with 6,233 seafarers affected on 410 ships. Turkey had 61 abandonment cases last year. Currently 15 foreign-flagged vessels are abandoned in the Sea of Marmara.
