Deaths from DRC Ebola outbreak top 200: officials
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC has surpassed 200, with 875 confirmed cases and a 23% mortality rate since the outbreak was declared on May 15. The outbreak is concentrated in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with Ituri accounting for nearly 95% of infections. The virus has crossed into Uganda, with 19 cases and two deaths. Africa CDC warns the outbreak could become more severe than the 2014-2016 epidemic. Congolese Health Minister Roger Kamba visited Bunia to assess response. Genetic analysis indicates the Ebola Bundibugyo strain emerged from a new wildlife spillover event, ruling out an undetected chain of transmission.
