Ex-President Nasheed, Senior Democrats Rejoin MDP at Special Rally

Former President Mohamed Nasheed rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at a rally in Sultan Park, Malé, on June 23, 2025, nearly two years after leaving the party he co-founded. Several former MDP members who had joined Nasheed's breakaway party, The Democrats, also returned, including Eva Abdulla, Ilyas Labeeb, Imthiyaz Fahmy, and Ibrahim Rasheed. Most MDP leadership attended, but former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was absent. Nasheed criticized the government's debt management, stating that state debt is 120% of productivity, with $1.2 billion due next year and gross reserves of $813 million. He predicted a major loss for the government in next year's local council elections. Nasheed's return followed a resolution by The Democrats allowing members to rejoin the MDP.
