Remarks by His Excellency Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Vice President of the Republic of Maldives, at the High-level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef spoke at the High-level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation in Tajikistan on 30 May 2025. He highlighted the link between glacier melt and sea-level rise threatening Maldives, where nearly 80% of islands are less than a metre above sea level. He called for limiting global warming to 1.5°C and noted that Maldives submitted its third Nationally Determined Contribution in February 2025, aiming to reduce emissions by 1.52 million tons by 2035 and increase renewable energy ambition.
