Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Passes Away at 100

Professor John B Goodenough, the oldest Nobel laureate and inventor of the lithium-ion battery, passed away at 100 on 25 June, one month shy of his 101st birthday. He was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. His groundbreaking work in 1980 at Oxford University led to the development of the lithium-ion battery, powering portable electronics and electric vehicles. He shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. Goodenough did not receive royalties from his invention and donated his award stipends to research and scholarships. He overcame a difficult childhood with dyslexia and went on to study at the University of Chicago.
