Legislative Amendment Clears Path for Thinadhoo Island Council to Attain City Council Status

The Parliament enacted an amendment to the Decentralisation Act allowing Thinadhoo Island Council in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to attain City Council status. The bill, introduced by MP Hisaan Hussain (MDP), passed with 42 votes and no opposition. Former President Solih had conferred city status on Thinadhoo Island on 30 August 2023, but legislative hurdles prevented upgrade. The amendment stipulates that if more than one year remains in the council's term (currently two years), it will become City Council. Upon ratification by President Muizzu, the Council President becomes mayor and the Vice President deputy mayor.

Government to Vet Thai Company Before Handing Over Thinadhoo Airport Project: Infrastructure Ministry

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure clarified that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with Thailand's Pan Pacific Company Limited for developing an international airport at Thinadhoo Island, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The company will be vetted for capacity before signing the main contract. Pan Pacific proposed a 4km runway, passenger and seaplane terminals, a luxury resort, a yacht marina, and a flight school. The project was announced at a Thinadhoo event, and the council and residents first learned of it at the event.
