Invalidated case of spotted ballot papers to Supreme Court
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has appealed to the Supreme Court after the High Court voided three ballot papers in a local council election for Veyvah Council. The case was brought by Mohamed Nazeeh, a People's National Congress (PNC) candidate, against the Elections Commission. The three papers had markings initially deemed invalid but later declared valid after a re-examination of the vote box. The Elections Commission's lawyer argued the marks were printing dots, not voter-made. The High Court ruled the marks made the papers identifiable. An MDP candidate won by two votes. The appeal is now before the Supreme Court.
