Rape: More Than a Crime, a Deep-Rooted Sociological Phenomenon
The West Bengal State Assembly passed the 'Aparajita Women and Child Bill' on 3 September, prescribing death penalty for rape resulting in victim death, following the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College. Experts argue strict punishments are not deterrent. India reported 33,356 rape cases in 2018, with 94% victims knowing offenders.
