Global Warming to Exceed 1.5C Threshold Within Five Years, Warns WMO
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns there is a 66% probability that global temperatures will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels between now and 2027. This threshold was set by the Paris Agreement. While surpassing it temporarily does not mean the goal is lost, continued exceedance over a decade would intensify severe impacts like heatwaves, wildfires, and storms. The WMO initially predicted less than a 20% chance, now at 66%. There is also a 98% probability of surpassing the hottest year on record, driven by greenhouse gas emissions and El Niño.
