AEH Introduces First Primary PCI Service Outside Malé

Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) has introduced Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), becoming the first facility outside Malé to offer this life-saving treatment for heart attack patients. The service was launched in collaboration with the National Cardiac Centre during a medical mission from 31 March to 2 April 2026. CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem called it a major milestone in expanding cardiac care. During the mission, 11 angiograms and 6 angioplasties were performed. The programme also introduced Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) implants and permanent pacemaker insertions in Addu City. This initiative is part of the government's decentralisation of specialised healthcare, reducing the need for travel to Malé or abroad.
