Opposition Parties Boycott Opening Sitting of Parliament for 2024

The opening sitting of the Maldives Parliament for 2024 on Monday, 5 February 2024, was boycotted by opposition parties MDP and The Democrats, leaving only 24 members present. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu delivered his inaugural address outlining his administration's vision. Speaker Mohamed Aslam acknowledged the boycott. MDP cited the change of the opening day from a holiday to a working day as an attempt to undermine Parliament's dignity, and lack of action against threats and attacks on MPs. The Democrats protested the President's decision to invite three ministers who had not received parliamentary approval, deeming it unconstitutional. Speaker Aslam warned against power struggles harming national progress. The session was attended by the Chief Justice and cabinet members, including ministers reappointed despite parliamentary rejection.
