HPA to Launch Nationwide Screening in Response to Filariasis Resurgence
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced a nationwide screening campaign starting February 16 in response to filariasis resurgence. Filariasis, declared eradicated by WHO in 2016, reemerged in December 2023 with all 32 cases imported and affecting migrant workers. The first case was detected on December 14 in Kulhudhuffushi City, Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Screening will cover locals and migrants on all inhabited islands, resorts, and industrial islands. No new cases have been detected since December 24 among 778 screened individuals.
