Shaheem, Iyaz Clash Over Allegations of Lies and Pressure to Divorce Wife After Gaza Protests

Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and scholar Dr Mohamed Iyaz engaged in a public clash after Iyaz claimed a government minister told him to divorce his wife, Aishath Shadhiya, who was arrested for protesting Israel's genocide in Gaza. Shadhiya and Dr Shazra Ibrahim were detained on 28 August for protesting near diplomatic missions in Malé and released on condition they not protest near embassies. At a press conference, Shaheem denied telling Iyaz to divorce, saying Iyaz complains about his wife's disobedience. Iyaz on 8 September revealed the instruction, and later on X accused Shaheem of lying, stating Shaheem ordered through Mohamed Shifan. Iyaz also criticized Shaheem's morality and revealed derogatory messages about Shadhiya in a Viber group. The arrests, the first of pro-Palestinian protesters in Maldives, drew criticism from MDP and Adhaalath Party. The government defended police actions, and public discontent grew over failure to ban Israeli nationals.
