ECM Publishes Official Results of Malé City Council By-Elections

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) published official results of the Malé City Council by-elections held on 13 January 2024. Adam Azim of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won the mayoral seat with 7,721 votes (44.81%), defeating former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) who received 5,031 votes (29.58%). Turnout was 17,008 (31.48%) out of 54,680 eligible voters. In the council by-elections, PNC won two seats (Aminath Rishfa in South Henveiru, Hassan Nizam in South Maafannu) and MDP won one (Ahmed Rishwan in Central Henveiru). Other mayoral candidates included Mohamed Saif Fathih (Democrats, 2,343 votes), Hussain Waheed (independent, 1,188 votes), and Shuaib Ali (independent, 125 votes).
