Public Accounts Committee Orders Four Additional Special Audits

The Parliament Public Accounts Committee has mandated the Auditor General's Office to conduct four additional special audits: Malé City Council, Urbanco, Football Association of Maldives (FAM), and Velana International Airport expansion. FAM's inclusion was proposed by MP Ilyas Labeeb, replacing FENAKA Corporation. The committee reserved four slots for special audits. FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel is under police investigation for corruption, money laundering, and misappropriation, and has been banned from leaving the country. The total number of special audits for 2024 rises to nine, including the Floating City Project, STO, FSM, SDFC, MSSC, and RAC. The AGO's 2024 plan includes 346 audits overall. The AGO budget was approved at MVR112.2 million, down from a proposed MVR123 million. Auditor General is Hussain Niyazy, appointed in July 2021.
