Nelivaru Finolhu, Huraa Faru in Baa Atoll Receive Protected Status
The Maldives Ministry of Environment has designated Nelivaru Finolhu and Huraa Faru in Baa Atoll as protected areas for manta-ray conservation. Nelivaru Finolhu (665 hectares) features a manta-ray cleaning station, with 105 individual manta-rays sighted. Huraa Faru (639 hectares) is north of Hanifaru Bay and has 436 manta-rays sighted. The areas are protected under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act. Additionally, on 2 November, Daravandhoo Shallows and Innafushi Island were also added to the protected list.
