137 recruits graduate from MNDF’s 72nd Basic Training Course

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) held the graduation ceremony for the 72nd Basic Training Course at Addu Training Centre, with 137 recruits graduating. Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed officiated. Awards were given for best overall trainee (Private Mohamed Nazeeh Rasheed), physical fitness, discipline, and marksmanship. The course started on 7 March 2026 and lasted three months.

Severe Weather Alert: Yellow and White Warnings Issued Nationwide

The Maldives Meteorological Service issued white and yellow weather alerts across multiple atolls as the southwest monsoon strengthens. White alerts were active from 07:00 to 11:00 for Laamu Atoll through Addu City, extended to 17:00 for Dhaalu Atoll through Addu City. A yellow alert from 09:30 to 13:30 covers Haa Alifu to Faafu Atolls. Warnings include heavy rain, gusts up to 50 mph, and rough seas. The monsoon is expected to intensify over the next three days, with safety measures advised.

The Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms across the country this weekend, with a White Alert issued from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll to Addu City from 1:15 PM to 6:00 PM today. Winds up to 40 mph and rough seas are expected, especially during squalls. The southwest monsoon is active from May to November, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Strong Winds Rip Off Roofs, Down Trees in Addu and Fuvahmulah

Strong winds ripped off roofs of at least three houses and downed trees in Addu and Fuvahmulah cities. The Maldives Meteorological Service attributed the weather to the rainy season and issued a yellow alert until 11 p.m. Sunday, warning of strong winds, heavy rains, and rough seas. In Addu City, a roof was blown off on Maradhoo-Feydhoo Island. In Fuvahmulah City, two houses lost roofs in the Dhiguvaadu Ward, and billboards were damaged. Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar confirmed damage and said authorities are assisting. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Addu City Council are providing support. The Met Office warned of winds gusting up to 34 mph. The National Disaster Management Authority advised residents to secure roofs and items.

Government to Assist in Addu Tourism Development Funding

Minister for Tourism Ibrahim Faisal announced that funding for tourism development in Addu City will begin soon after meeting with stakeholders. He noted that previous administrations failed to develop allocated land. The Addu Coastal Tourism Development project, a pledge by President Mohamed Muizzu, will be carried out. The Addu Tourism Development Plan was launched by Faisal and Mayor Ali Nizar, to be implemented over five years.

The Addu Coastal Tourism Development Plan was launched by Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal as part of President Mohamed Muizzu's Week 14 roadmap. Prepared by CDC Consulting, the five-year plan aims to develop 6,000 tourist beds, a seaplane hub, create 10,000 jobs, and revive the Shangri-La Resort. It also includes a cultural village, wellness zones, marine protected areas, and a hospitality school, with the goal of promoting tourism and showcasing Addu's heritage.
