Future of Maradona death trial in doubt as scandal-hit judge steps down

Judge Julieta Makintach has stepped down from the trial of Diego Maradona's medical team after a scandal involving her participation in a miniseries about the case. The recusal occurred on Tuesday following allegations of impartiality, influence peddling, and bribery. The trailer for 'Divine Justice' showed Makintach in court corridors, and unauthorized recordings were made. The hearing descended into chaos with accusations from prosecutor Patricio Ferrari and defense lawyer Rodolfo Baque. Maradona's daughter Gianinna and former partner Veronica Ojeda were emotional. Makintach stated she had 'no choice' but to withdraw from the three-judge panel, throwing the trial's future into doubt.

Former Argentine Army Officer Faces Trial in Italy for Crimes Against Humanity

A Rome judge has ordered the trial of former Argentine army officer Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Luis Malatto for the premeditated killing of eight people during Argentina's military dictatorship (1976-1983). Malatto fled Argentina in 2011 to Sicily. An extradition request was denied by Rome in 2014 due to insufficient evidence, but Italy began its own investigation in 2015. The trial is scheduled to commence on 22 April. Victims' relatives seek justice. Italy previously convicted 24 people for Operation Condor in 2019.
