Underwater swing in Gaafaru becomes a hit with locals and tourists

An underwater swing in Kaafu Gaafaru, installed about 15 feet deep, has become popular among locals and tourists. Launched by local guesthouse operators, it is free to use and built with durable steel and concrete. Gaafaru is a fast-growing local tourism destination with 11 guesthouses. The Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) announced plans to reclaim 16 islands in the lagoon for a major tourism project including a private island and resort.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board Official Visit to the Maldives Concludes

The UNICEF Executive Board concluded an official visit to the Maldives from 30 May to 2 June 2026. The delegation met with ministers of Foreign Affairs; Education, Higher Education and Skills Development; Climate Change, Environment and Energy; and Health, Family and Welfare. They also met with the Maldives Police Service, Prosecutor General's Office, Children's Ombudsperson, and judiciary. Field visits were conducted to K. Gaafaru and Vilimalé, where they observed the Techpath digital learning initiative and engaged with local stakeholders, young people, civil society, and the diplomatic community.

Backlog Resolved: Fishermen Set to Receive Funds in 48 Hours, Declares President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that fishermen will receive funds within 48 hours starting tomorrow. He revealed that 38 million rufiyaa owed by the previous administration has been settled, paid to 196 fishermen with BML accounts and 20 with MIB accounts. The President acknowledged delays due to MIFCO reforms. A new agreement between the Ministry of Finance, MIFCO, and BML ensures timely future payments. The announcement coincides with Fishermen’s Day.
