Majlis Reshapes Supreme Court: A Bold Move for Judicial Reform!

The People's Majlis approved an amendment to the Courts Act reducing the number of Supreme Court justices from seven to five, with 68 votes in favor. The amendment was introduced by MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed due to technical issues causing a roll call vote. Proponents argue it aligns with governance aspirations. The new law empowers the Judicial Service Commission to recommend removal of unqualified justices, requiring a two-thirds Majlis majority. The JSC must submit names within five days of enactment, and the Majlis must decide within seven days. The current Supreme Court bench includes Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan and six others. Historically, the bench size changed multiple times: 2008 (5), 2010 (7), 2014 (5 under Yameen), 2019 (7 under Solih). Critics express concern that the reduction may influence an ongoing case challenging the anti-defection amendment.
