Maldives Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, speaking at the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025 in Istanbul, urged international cooperation for climate-resilient maritime infrastructure. He highlighted the Maldives' reliance on sea transport and its vulnerability to climate impacts, calling for targeted financial aid and investment from global institutions. The forum, organized by Türkiye's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure with World Bank backing, runs from June 27 to 29. Ameen's participation aims to secure concrete funding for ferry upgrades, port modernization, and resilience projects, including the Greater Malé Connectivity Project.

Maldives Calls for Stronger OIC to Address Challenges Facing Muslim Ummah

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel called for a stronger OIC and collective action to address challenges facing the Muslim world at the 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul on 21 June 2025. He condemned Israel's violence in Gaza and attacks on Iran, urging recognition of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as capital. Khaleel also held bilateral talks with Tajikistan's foreign minister.

Maldives, Türkiye Formalise PTA

The Maldives and Türkiye signed a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) on November 4, 2024, introducing tariff reductions for Maldivian exporters, especially in fisheries. The agreement, signed by Minister Mohamed Saeed and his Turkish counterpart Ömer Bolat, aims to strengthen trade relations and lower prices for Turkish products in Maldives. It was based on discussions during President Muizzu's visit to Türkiye in November 2023. The Maldives also signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China effective January 1, 2025, and is reportedly negotiating an FTA with India.
