Tremors Felt in Maldives as 6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Nicobar Islands
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the Nicobar Islands in India late Wednesday, causing tremors in parts of the Maldives. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) recorded the quake at 11:48 p.m. local time at the Kaadedhdhoo monitoring station in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, after it occurred at 11:41 p.m. The agency confirmed no tsunami was generated and no threat to the Maldives. The distance between the Maldives and the Nicobar Islands is approximately 2,275 kilometres. Indian media also reported no threat to any country in the Indian Ocean region.
