MDP Gov’t Paid MVR 26 Million for Just MVR 2.8 Million Damages: Audit
An Auditor General's review found that the previous MDP administration overpaid MVR 23.2 million to Umet Construction for the cancelled Kurendhoo harbour project. The contract was awarded to Works Corporation Ltd in January 2011 and subcontracted to Umet. Work stalled in early 2013, and the contract was terminated on March 10, 2013, after an MTCC assessment found inadequate progress. Courts later ruled the termination lawful, but the Economic Council under former President Solih approved a MVR 26 million payout in April 2023, exceeding the legally justified MVR 2.8 million. The audit recommends recovery of overpaid funds and investigation into officials.
