Chinese Research Vessel Concludes Three-Month Expedition Off Maldivian Waters

Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 concluded a three-month expedition in waters east of the Maldives' exclusive economic zone (EEZ), making two port calls in the Maldives on 22 February and 25 April. The vessel arrived on 29 January. Its mission coincided with President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to China, where 20 agreements were signed, including a defence agreement on 4 May. The Muizzu administration remained secretive about the agreements, contradicting transparency pledges. Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon confirmed that no research was conducted in Maldivian territory. India closely monitored the vessel's activities.
