Over 30% of Thilamalé Bridge Complete; Project 1.2% Ahead of Schedule

Over 30% of the India-funded Thilamalé Bridge project is complete, with the project 1.2% ahead of schedule. State Minister Ibrahim Thoaam Mohamed confirmed that 54.4% of piling work is done. The US$500 million project, funded by a US$400 million line of credit from Exim Bank of India and a US$100 million grant from the Government of India, is expected to be completed by end of 2026. Afcons Underestimated Thilamalé Bridge Project: Minister Muththalib

Minister of Construction Abdulla Muththalib stated that the delay in the Thilamalé Bridge is due to contractor Afcons underestimating project requirements and lack of experience, compounded by challenging conditions like strong tides and geo-technical issues. He expects completion on schedule per the supplementary agreement. Afcons, an Indian company and part of Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has completed major projects in India and abroad.
